Ann Miller Titus |
Ann Miller Titus has been stitching since she was a little girl, when her grandmother gave her a printed cross stitch sampler to embroider. In the mid 1980's, she began making wall quilts and while each consisted of three layers hand stitched together, they differed significantly from traditional quilt designs. Nearly twenty years later, Ann began to experiment with a wide variety of surface design techniques to alter textiles, still honoring her quilt making roots by continuing to stitch layers of fabric together. The result is a body of work that celebrates color, texture, and line and that has been described as "fresh" and "decidedly feminine." Ann's work explores three questions. "Are you happy?" features the transfer of vintage photographs to fabric and studies the often ambiguous messages we physically portray to others. "Are we there yet?" offers a series of imaginary locations and topographies crafted from dyed fabrics and papers. And "Does it twirl?" questions the consequences of our attempts to analyze, categorize and quantify sensory experiences by superimposing radial graphs onto extraordinary bursts of color. Her most recent series, "Particle and Wave", depicts landscapes illuminated by unfamiliar sources of light. Ann uses a variety of surface design and fiber techniques, including fabric discharge, use of disperse dyes, image transfer, and felt making. She is a member of the Great River Artisans Cooperative, the Hannibal Alliance Art Gallery, and the Quincy Quilting Guild.
