I was born and raised around Fulton, Missouri. My mother, father, and other family members have always been my biggest fans and have encouraged me to continue to use my artistic talent. I would not be able to do the art I love to do without the support of my loving and wonderful husband and children. Their steadfast support has allowed me to devote more of my time and energy to doing what I love to do and that is art. I attribute most of my artistic training to that which I received from my high school art teacher, Sheila (Burre) Guthrie. She was the greatest. My color pencil knowledge I can honestly say I learned from books and my own trial and errors as well as successes. My watercolor I also learned from books, and a class or two from very talented local artists. I know that with each painting I continue to learn and grow and am grateful to all that have helped me or cheered me on along the way. I grew up living in the country and loving the natural realistic beauty of my surroundings. Art was my first love and watercolor my first medium of choice. Then later in life I discovered colored pencil and gained a new love. Colored pencil enables me to paint with the effects of watercolor and oil paintings yet is much more portable. I love to the way I can achieve so many textures. The smoothness and shine of a copper kettle, the roughness of twine rope, and the softness of a baby's skin. |
Until recently, art was only a part-time passion as I was employed full-time in the medical field. As a result of this, most of my works have been primarily commissioned. I've done numerous portraits of people and pets. I have also painted landscapes, wildlife, automobiles, churches, barns, and more. My trademark is specializing in turning "Photo Memories Into Art". I am now enjoying the time to further expand my talent and achieve some of my own personal art interests and goals. I love old classic automobiles and like to put something living in most of my art pieces. I like adding a plant, bug, wildlife, pet, or a reflection of someone in a piece. My paintings have been exhibited in numerous shows, galleries, cafe's, and competitions in Mid and Northeastern Missouri Regions. I have won various awards and recognition for my work over the past 23 years. I have had the honor of having my painting "Shadows and Reflections of a Time Past" selected by internationally known professional colored pencil artist, Ann Kullberg, for inclusion in her book "Colored Pencil Secrets for Success". The book was released May 2009. I am a member of the Missouri Watercolor Society, the Colored Pencil Society of America, and a Juried Best of Missouri Hands member. The story behind the painting of "The Two Angels-When One Door Closes Another Opens" by artist I. Lynn Garriott-Porter This painting was done at the request of the Mother of the two girls. In 2006 the very beautiful and athletic 12 year old, Kelsey, was killed in an auto accident when the vehicle she was riding in was hit by a drunk driver. A year later the family was given a blessing of another angel, Riley, who was born with the same color blue eyes and blonde hair that her sister Kelsey had. Kelsey loved playing basketball and was on her school team. She also loved her orange flip-flops which she had her Mom purchase for her each year. Kelsey being athletic was also prone to a scratch, bump, or bruise on her legs, hence the bandaid on her knee. 25% of the sales received by the artist for the purchase of this print is donated by the artist to MADD ( Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) in the memory of Kelsey. |
